5 books that changed my life

Hey hey hey, it’s almost four weeks into 2019! After the holidays the thing in many people’s mind is keeping up with their New Year resolutions. With life back to normal however, big life changes may seem more of a baggage than a source of joy and inspiration. If you’re not truly motivated, any changes after surviving the holiday season can be too big to handle, especially if you happen to be a highly sensitive person. In particular, sensation seeking Hsps like myself, find themselves constantly going back and forth with anxiety and enthusiasm caused by changes. Other Hsps, on the other hand, may experience worry and tiredness over keeping up with the changes they have planned. Sounds familiar?

Changing my life radically over the last couple of years has taught me that the best way to control one’s life and guide it to the right direction, is to handle it piece by piece. And, as cliché it may sound, happiness comes from within. I believe strongly that any life changes can be conquered when you know yourself, love yourself as you are and follow your heart. When you’ve got these covered, it’s easier to absorb more inspiration and motivation from other wonderful, strong, happy and successful people. From one at a time though, otherwise you may feel lost in the midst of all the great advice. 😉

This is why, you lovely people, I want to introduce to you 5 amazing and motivating authors and books. These not only helped me reorganize and change my life but are still motivating me to create my own fairytale every single day.

1) Elaine Aron – The Highly Sensitive Person

If you are a highly sensitive person and you haven’t read this book, NOW is the time to do so.

Elaine Aron is a reseacher, who is to thank for the fact that the term Hsp exists and that we know so much about this charasterictic of ours. The Highly Sensitive Person is Aron’s first book about sensitivity, a book explaining the vast diversity of our traits. When, a couple of years back, I realised that I was a Hsp, this book helped me understand my habits and traits so much better. At the same time the feeling of being the only one of my kind disappeared and I began to see that I am a part of a wonderful, strong and powerful minority of amazingly intuitive people.

Be warned though: First time I started to read this book, I didn’t finish. This is because I was reading it too intensely. I was overwhelmed by a feeling that the special sensitivity I had had for 30 years, wasn’t so special after all. It took me a while to comprehend that a highly sensitive person is not the copy of other Hsps. Being highly sensitive doesn’t dictate us, it’s merely a part of us. The rest is that unique individuality that makes me, you and all the people around this world so special and unreplaceable.

If you find this book invigorating, make sure to get to know to Aron’s other book about sensitivity: The Highly Sensitive Person in Love. I can recommend this book from all my heart, though I suggest you start with the first one.

2) Mel Robbins – The 5 Second Rule

Out of all of these books, Mel Robbins’ The 5 Second Rule has been the most lifechanging one for me. Even now, I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that something so simple can be so effective. And no, the book is not about how long food can lay on the floor before it turns inedible. 😀

Do you guys ever feel that you are stuck and can’t get where you want to be? According to Mel Robbins, we all know what to do to get unstuck, we just don’t get around to do it. We procrastinate after procrastinating the procrastination. Bills should be paid, but oh, shouldn’t the laundry be dealt with first and the all-important tv show is just about to start on channel whatever-to-get-me-off-my-duties. A project’s deadline is up, but maybe it would be best to have one more meeting and see if new ideas pop up while waiting around a few more days. It’s a nice weather outside to go running, but actually the running shoes are probably lost somewhere, and shopping is more important and furthermore it is definitely too dark and slippery outside anyways.

If the previous examples sound familiar, don’t ya worry. I bet that nearly all of us procrastinate from time to time. But hey, luckily the aid is near. Mel Robbins’ The 5 Second Rule gives us a solution on a silver platter. An incredibly simple solution I might add. You practically cheat your brain to stop before you start procrastinating, time after time. Simply just by counting to five. May sound too good to be true, but seriously, trust me, this book is one worth reading. Now. Today. Asap. Without any procrastination.

Do you recognize the procrastinator in you? Count out loud 5,4,3,2,1, get up from your oh-so-comfortable couch and walk to the book store. I mean it. Don’t even finish this post, get up and do it. I can almost guarantee 100 % that your life is going to be better. After joining the Mel clan, come back and share what you’ve experienced. Just do it!

3) Sarah Silverton – The Mindfulness Breakthrough

A while back I wrote about presence and living in the moment. Afterwards I was contacted by many of you, especially Hsps, who were still looking for their inner peace. Thus, I present to you dear co-sensitive and others in need for a bit of serenity, a wonderful book to read.

Have you ever sat still, staring at a piece of chocolate paying attention to what it really looks like? Or sat in your office chair and realise what it feels like to have your back against the fabric of the seat? Probably to some of you I may sound a bit silly right about now, but this book really helped me stop and see the world around me. It taught me to pay attention to the everyday things and to see life’s small moments in a completely different way.

This book is filled with mindfulness exercises, which truly help you find new unexplored things inside you. If you have a busy life (don’t we all, right?), don’t get discouraged. The exercises are fairly short, so there is no reason not do them. I absolutely recommend you try, especially if you are just learning about mindfulness. This book is a great starting point and a quick read. 🙂

4) Marie Kondo – The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing

It is common for a Hsp to have a head full of thoughts all the time. And analysis. And feelings. And worry. At least I have. Sometimes even to the point of exhaustion, turned into desperation turned into laughter of my funny way of thinking. A highly sensitive brain is constantly in a roller coaster. Luckily, I have noticed that the more I spend time at a serene and organized place, the more I am able to deal with the emotions inside me. As an American writer and speaker Gretchen Rubin (smart woman btw) has said, outer order contributes to inner calm.

This outer order may be hard to achieve. You clean a bit here, a bit there but the organized spaces disappear as quickly as they appeared. Unless. Unless you are familiar with the Konmari method. Marie Kondo, a Japanese decluttering and organizing consultant and her famous method are probably familiar to some of you. Konmari-method skyrocketed to world fame a few years back and now, thanks to Marie’s new Netflix series, the method is again the topic on everyone’s lips. If you haven’t read this book, you might find the whole thing to be a silly, passing trend. However, Konmari isn’t just a method for cleaning your house, it’s a way of life and a method of surrounding yourself with happiness and joy. Even though the book isn’t about minimalism, for me it goes hand in hand with my minimalism. And the wonderful thing is, it can help highly sensitive people like me breathe more easily. Though I read this book a few years ago for the first time, the effects of are still present in my everyday life.

Whether you are skeptical or exited, I recommend to go for the original book. There are a lot of blogposts, articles, videos and tv shows about this subject out there, but to actually understand what it means when something sparks joy, I believe you need to read the book personally. Only this way you can understand why Konmari is a worldwide sensation and why us rooting for it can be found everywhere. 🙂

5) Gary Vaynerchuk – Crushing it

If you are an entrepreneur or entrepreneurial and you don’t know who Gary Vaynerchuk is, you need to find out. The Belarusian, US-based entrepreneur, influencer, writer, motivator and a source of many people’s admiration won’t leave you cold; this man is one you either hate or love. Many, me included, are a part of these Gary-cheerleaders. If you like Tony Robbins and consider yourself a Duracell bunny, click to Instagram, Snapschat, Facebook, Youtube and all social media channels to get to now Gary, this guy is the bomb!

Crushing it is sort of a sequel to Gary’s first book Crush it. Crushing it is all about entrepreneurship, hard work, social media and take-the-bull-by-the-horns attitude for life. In this book Gary introduces you to influencers, entrepreneurs and inspiring people who have changed their lives and started to achieve their dreams. Along with Gary’s tips and insights, this book is filled with these people’s stories about how much of an effect reading Gary’s first book, Crush it, had on their lives. Crushing it is the last kick in the butt if Mel Robbins’ The 5 Second Rule wasn’t enough to get you off that couch.

If you don’t know Gary beforehand, you should definitely read the original Crush it as well. For me however, Crushing it and the stories within it made such a big impression, that my own life took a turn towards new adventures.

Last tip before I let you get to it: Crushing it is worth listening as an audiobook. Gary is a great speaker and Amy Landino, who is reading the female stories in the book, is one of my all time favorite Youtubers.
